I got IN!!!
I was accepted into the RN program here, FINALLY! Of course it was to the much further college, Sandhills but STILL I was accepted! I am still waiting to hear from Fayetteville Tech's program which is about 10 minutes from my home. That won't happen (finding out) until May. I am pretty confident that I will be accepted there too but you never know. My dilemma is this, Sandhills has a wonderful RN program and the people there are SO helpful. They call me at least once a month to make sure I am on track with where I need to be. They are VERY clear on the rules and regulations that go along with their program too. The only downfall is that Sandhills is 45 minutes to an hour away (depending on traffic). From the schedule that I remember viewing from last year, I would be traveling there about three days a week. At least it's not M-F but yikes, it is still a lot of gas being used driving back and forth. Now, Fayetteville Tech (the first school I applied for the RN program this year) is the much closer college and they have a great success rate for their RN program but I have had nothing but difficulties with the people who work there. I have had to work my BUTT off to get to where I am right now. I waited about 6 months to FINALLY have all my classes transferred there and then a few more months later, the classes were posted on my transcripts. That was done after I had called, emailed, and went down and spoke to the "right" people. I applied for their program last year as well but my science classes that I already had, were not enough. Every other college that has a A.D.N. program (outside of NC) has higher, college level requirements that include Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, and Microbiology. I have ALL of those classes and Fayetteville Tech requires lower level Biology (high school level) along with high school level Algebra (which i do have from H.S.) as their prereqs. So, because of the H.S. biology for which I did not have because I decided to take a Marine Biology in H.S. I got screwed cheated out of being in category I which is the category that students would be chosen from ONLY for the A.D.N. program. Seriously, how messed up is that? So guess what class I took last Spring? Cell Biology for which I ACED because everything I ever learned in any of my college level science classes was a repeat in Cell Bio...DERRRR! So, here I am now, with every.single.class that this college could ever want from me for this program, waiting to hear if I have been accepted. If I am not accepted, than I will know that it is NOT the right school and Sandhills awaits me. =) That is the update for now and as soon as I find out more, I am sure to post another blog.

January 19th 2011
(I wrote this a few days ago and forgot to post)
We slept in, all four of us. The boys stayed home from school and Logan and I enjoyed the extra time suggling before we got up. This is precious time before he deploys. That man is my heart. =) So, I eventually got up and decided to make a HUGE breakfast (per Logans request) eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, and cinnamon rolls...I told you it was big. We sat together talking as if there were no worries in the world. That's how it should be, the boys knew their daddy was leaving that day but we wanted to enjoy every last minute and not think about later that night, when we would say goodbye.
The rest of that day now seems like a blur up until we got in the car...
We started driving towards the XVIII Airborne Corps Headquarters, where I would watch my husband line up in formation after his name had been called off of the manifest, and feel like my heart was slowly being ripped out of my chest. The emotions were so raw so I'd rather show you pictures than try and describe the rest of that day.
I was so very thankful to have one of my good friends come with us and capture the Bixler family as a whole. Thank you Mrs. Shely. =)

Applied
YES, Monday I made the trip (only 45 minutes) to Sandhills and submitted my application for their RN program. I already applied to the much closer school back in October but I need to have a backup plan (just in case). Phew!! I know this year will be my year. I sure am glad I have a husband who cares about my happiness and goals for my education. We have been through SO much since he entered into the Army 7+ years ago. Anyway, I should be hearing from Sandhills by February/March timeframe. Fingers crossed peeps. =)
PS- yeah, that's all I have for now. I have been spending all my time with the boys while daddy is away. I love being with them, Brennen and Connor are like the coolest little kids around!!

Keep it together Shelbie
It's wicked cold outside today, like 23 degrees with a wind chill to make it feel like 5 degrees. BrrRR! I still love this time of year especially since Christmas is only a week and a half away. As I try to enjoy this season, I have Logan on my mind. Next year this time, he will be back in Iraq (as if the man hasn't seen that damned placed enough) and alone, without his wife and boys to keep him in good spirits. I feel absolutely guilty. GUILTY that we get to be with all the ones who love us, spending time with my boys who have seen deployments before but don't think too much about it because Grandma and Papa are so busy loving them, along with Aunt Shaunna and Aunt Cherish who adore them. Why is this so unfair? Logan is one of the strongest men I know. He hurts but doesn't show it. He is scared and I wouldn't know it by the way he hides his feelings. So, here we are once again, T-minus 30 days and the love of my life will be half way across the world for an absurd amount of time. I guess the one thing I can look forward to is the feeling of his embrace when he returns. The falling in love all over again. The reconnection between a man and his children. Us together again as one. Bare with me ya'll, you are coming along with me on this crazy journey that's called DEPLOYMENT. Argh.

An explanation to my frustration
I can't seem to stop thinking about how hard I have worked to get into the nursing program. I have worked my butt off and although so many people ask why I have yet to finish, I refuse to let that get to me. I guess if they don't understand the process we have to go through, they will never know. I wish it was easier but the fact of the matter is, it isn't.
After I had my first born, Brennen, I realized what a blessing it was to have such an amazing nurse who helped me deliver him. I mean, I was only 19 years-old and just a baby myself but decided to still become a parent even though I hadn't a single clue as to how to be one. Shayla was her name, my nurse, and she explained every single feeling and emotion I would experience that day. She told me what procedures would be done for when it came time to do them. She held my hand when I was scared to push. She reassured me everything was going the way it was suppose to. She smiled at me when she saw how excited I was to see Brennen for the first time. It was like at that very moment, she knew exactly what I needed and I am forever thankful for her on that day. That experience is what led me into the nursing field. I wanted to help people, women, like Shayla helped me. So here I am today, 8 years later and I have yet to complete this goal of mine but I guarantee you this, it will be done. =)
After struggling as first time parents, Logan and I both decided that the Army would be a much better life, a more stable life than what we had. I still believe that to this day but have to remind myself that becuase we chose this for our family, my education has become second best. Every time I feel like I am on a good "flow" of classes, something always comes up and messes with me. =/ I am not saying I regret our decision to take on this "Army life" of ours, but DANG, I just want finish school already.
Another year has passed and I am still waiting to get accepted into a program. Since being stationed here in Fort Bragg, I have come to realize how different every state is when it comes to prereqs required to enter in. So, once again I complete more classes to suffice these East Coast crazies...lol. October came and I have applied to the program closest to me except I decided this year to apply to another program that is a little bit further away but at least give myself the benefit of two schools acceptances rather than one. The process actually begins in February where the auditors review my application along with all classes that are needed to graduate, besides the core classes themselves. That is where the most important step is taken, i either am placed into a Cat 1 or Cat 2. Category 1 gives me the best chance to be accepted and that is where the auditors go over every class and the grade I recieved. An example would be say Microbiology, which here in NC is a 4 credit hour course and since I got an A in that class, I get 4 points for every credit hour it's worth, so 16 points I will recieve. If I had recieved a B in that class, I could only get 3 points for every credit hour...a C would be 2 points and so on. I'm sure you get the point. This year, the school has a max points available of 104 and I am at a 104. =) So i really do hope that 2011 will be my year and come May, I will get this beautiful letter in the mail that is requesting my acceptance into their program. We shall see and I do hope to keep ya'll updated on that.
P.S. Sorry for the scatter-brained writing but a million things are on my mind.

Love Seeks to Understand
Day 18
"Prepare a special dinner at home, just for the two of you. The dinner can be as nice as you prefer. Focus this time on getting to know your spouse better, perhaps in areas you've rarely talked about. Determine to make it an enjoyable evening for you and your mate."
This Dare is harder to do because it's hardly ever JUST the two of us...I have to plan a special day for this one to happen, a day where I have a friend available to watch the boys for us. So, to be continued...

Love Promotes Intimacy
Day 17
"Determine to guard your your mate's secrets (unless they are dangerous to them or to you) and to pray for them. Talk with your spouse, and resolve to demonstrate love in spite of these issues. Really listen to them when they share personal thoughts and struggles with you. Make them feel safe."
This happens just about every day. Logan and I both can get into deep conversation and be completely honest about our wants, needs, fears, and struggles. This man I am married to is the most forgiving to his wife. I am far from perfect and he knows all my faults and never once has he turned his back on me. We are each others rock and that's why I can say we are a match made in heaven =) Who can claim they're infallible, there's only one at it sure as heck isn't me. After NINE years together, I can say what we have together doesn't come around often. A marriage is more than what's expected on the surface, you have to go through ups and downs and come out STILL loving one another. You have to be disappointed or let down. Be adventurous and not always predictable. Disagree. Agree. Nuture. the list goes on. My point is this, a marriage is more than bliss, it's suppose to have tough spots in it too. I believe those are the times that show truth in your vows. Anyone can love, that's the easiest part but can you and your spouse survive the battles of life? Only time will tell.

Love is Honorable
Day 15
"Choose a way to show honor and respect to your spouse that is above your normal routine. It may be holding the door for him. It might be putting his clothes away for him. It may be the way you listen and speak in your communication. Show your mate that he or she is highly esteemed in your eyes."
My husband has an adventurous mind. He loves to tell me about these explorations that one day he plans on taking (with me of course). I love how he thinks, I truly do but sometimes I feel the need to bring him back to reality because these "adventures" are slightly far-fetched. Over the weekend, another future journey came to his mind and I began listening. I started to wander off into his "fantasy travels" and realized how amazing he plans things out. He really puts thought into them and I wanted to show him my enthusiasm because I didn't dare want his story ruined or to end. With the help of my excitement, he turned into this giddy creature that I haven't seen in SO long. It amazes me, how much he wants his thoughts to be accepted and I just let them go. I learned today to not always think about how improbable his adventures may be, rather enjoy the delight we both share from them. It was FUN.

Love Intercedes
Day 16
"Begin praying today for your spouse's heart. Pray for three specific areas where you desire for God to work in your spouse's life and in your marriage."
I prayed today for quite some time and throughout the day. I prayed for Logan to have mercy on Him, believe he is true. I prayed for Logan to be content with every situation he has no control over. I prayed that our marriage (as great as it is today) has the ability to be greater with every passing day. The love we have only flourishes more. Our children continue to be the best they can and never give up even if life seems difficult at times. I prayed today, for good health in my husband, my children and myself. Today I prayed.

Love Takes Delight
Day 14
"Purposefully neglect an activity you would normally do so you can spend quality time with your spouse. Do something he would love to do or a project they'd really like to work on."
Today I decided to give up on homework. I am taking four classes this semester, two of which are online. Although it may seem easier to take classes online, its actually more time consuming. I practically check my classes FIVE times a day to catch up on a DB (discussion board) or respond to someone's thread they posted. I seriously don't want to miss anything because they are so interesting to me. Anyhow, yesterday I gave it up for the day. I decided to spend every moment with Logan and Connor (while Brennen went to the drag races with his friend). The sun was shining, the breeze was actually warm and it reached a whopping 60 degrees. We went on this beautiful, adventerous bike ride. The smiles on all three of our faces said it all...THIS is what lifes about =)

Love Fights Fair
Day 13
"Talk with your spouse about establishing healthy rules of engagement. If your mate is not ready for this, then write out your own personal rules to "fight" by. Resolve to abide by them when the next disagreement occurs."
Our rules:
1. We will never mention divorce.
2. We will not bring up old, unrelated items from the past.
3. We will never fight in public or in front of our children.
4. We will never touch one another in a harmful way.
5. Failure is NOT an option.
My own "me" rules:
1. I will listen first before speaking.
2. I will deal with my own issues up front.
3. I will speak gently and keep my voice down.
*If a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.~ Mark 3:25

Yes, a huge gap.
Obviously it has been a while since I last posted anything, let me explain...Mid January a tragic event happened to the people of Haiti. An earthquake that not only rocked their country, it rocked their lives forever. Within 48-hours, my husband received orders to deploy to Port Au Prince, Haiti in the efforts to help. Before I knew it, he was gone and already put to work by helping the US Embassy set up hospital tents as well as continue to find helpless survivors of this horrific tragedy. Logan was gone for a mere two weeks but those days he was there helped him put our family life into perspective. We are so blessed to have the resources here to help in any way a huge event were to take place and the love and support a family gives is more than words could explain...Now back to why I have an explanation. What many people don't realize is that when a husband (or wife in some cases) leave the home, returning is a huge adjustment. Logan has been deployed before and much longer than two weeks at that, but when he comes home, reacclimating is always difficult. When this occurs litterally everything stops and the focus is primarily put on family life. This is such an important part of making things work in a military family. It's hard to explain such a thing because it's in a league of it's own. Military is a lifestyle that at first can be extremely hard to get use to but we have no other choice. It pains me to say that the government puts their soldiers first and the rest of the family is not (this is a honest to goodness excuse for why it has taken me SO long to finish school). Back to my reasoning, so for the rest of us, we need to put in the effort to make time for family. I hardly get any time to do things I would love to do on a day-to-day basis and that's because my focus is on the Bixler's. This isn't me complaining because I don't regret the life I have. I adore my husband to pieces and our children mean the world to us. I have chosen to make certain parts in my life more important than others. I wouldn't be happy if I didn't have these loves and for that I put other hobbies on the "back burner". It's that simple.
(I know my explanation is a bit scatter-brained but I could go on in tangents)

Love Lets the Other Win
Day 12
"Demonstrate love by willingly choosing to give in to an area of disagreement between you and your spouse. Tell them you are putting their prefernce first."
So today, I realized how hard it can be to give in when I disagree with something Logan wants. In this particular case, he wanted my input in regards to buying a Hooka. Now let me give a little history on why I didn't feel it necessary to purchase one. I grew up with a father who was very sick for the longest time. It was hard for him to attend anything in high school due to this sickness. He was diagnosed with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. This is a genetic disorder that has caused him pain and suffeering and ultimately the disease Emphysema (chronic lung disease). Six years ago in April marks the anniversary of my fathers Bi-lateral Lung transplant. That day changed our lives forever. I thought I would lose my father to his deficiency and disease but instead was given a second chance at life. I cherish every minute I have with him because with his case, he still has the deficiency and although he had his transplant, it doesn't change things. This transplant simply gave him more time. On average, a lung recipient is given 12 years to live. What does this mean, it means I won't give up hope and pray that my dad beats those odds. For that, I refused to give in to Logan today. What's confusing to me is that Logan hates smokers and claims that Hooka is much healthier than smoking a cigarette but the truth is this, it's still a risk and one that I will not take.
I failed today but in this instance and know that I made the right decision. Better luck tomorrow =)

Love Cherishes
Day 11
"What need does your spouse have that you could meet today? Can you run an errand? Give a back rub? A foot massage? Choose a gesture that says, "I cherish you" and do it with a smile."
Simple. I went and faxed a few things today that needed to be done ASAP. Made him lunch. I even took his class A's to the drycleaner. What made today even better was he showed his appreciation. As nice as it may be to do something for your spouse, it is nice to show your gratitude when it's done.

Love is unconditional
Day 10
"Do something out of the ordinary today for your spouse- something that proves (to you and to them) that your love is based on your choice and nothing else. Wash his car. Clean the kitchen. Buy his favorite dessert. Fold the laundry. Demonstarte love to them for the sheer joy of being their partner in marriage."
Today, I took my hunny buns to a restaurant we both enjoy. I ordered him his favorite drink and his favorite appetizer while he was waiting for a parking space (it's incredible how long it takes to find a spot!!), as soon as he came in and found me at our table the food and drink was ready and waiting :). What's funny is that I do this kind of stuff daily anyway because it makes my love happy and I enjoy seeing him enjoy it.

Love makes good impressions
Day 9
"Think of a specific way you'd like to greet your spouse today. Do it with a smile and with enthusiasm. Then determine to change your greeting to reflect your love for them."
Oh I greeted him alright :) 'Nuff said

Love is not jealous
Day 8
"Determine to become your spouse's biggest fan and to reject any thoughts of jealousy. To help you set your heart on your spouse and focus on their achievements, take yesterday's list of negative attributes and discreetly burn it. Then share with your spouse how glad you are about a success he recently enjoyed."
Well, I didn't actually burn the list, I showed it to the shredder instead! It felt really good too. It seems that now days people focus so much more on the negative side of things that they forget all the positive that still exists. I have caught myself thinking that way and it doesn't make me feel good at all. Matter of fact, I feel pretty crummy!!! I spoke to Logan today after dinner and expressed my joy for him. This man is BRAVE! He went off to Airborne school and had never jumped out of a airplane and now he's a pro! What many people don't know is the military doesn't make many things fun but if you can look at the beneficial side, anything can be turned into something exciting. He was dreading this school for a few reasons, the first one being he's not near his wife and children. He doesn't feel at ease when he's far from home with nobody to confide in, can you blame him? The second reason being he's around these "higher ups" that look at all the soldiers as dumb ass' that have just entered into the military no matter what your rank is. Logan stuck through the grueling three weeks in Georgia and graduated with his wings and I am SOO proud of him. He needed to hear it too. It's like telling him I love him although he knows I do, but to be reminded of it never gets old.

Love believes the best
Day 7
"For todays dare, get two sheets of paper. On the first one, spend a few minutes writing out positive things about your spouse. Then do the same with the negative things on the second sheet. Place both sheets in a secret place for another day. There is a different purpose and plan for each. At some point during the remainder of the day, pick a positive attribute from the first list and thank your spouse for having this characteristic."
(This dare was done yesterday and I never got to post it)
I took two sheets of paper and have them with me here. This specific dare was somewhat harder than expected. I can be very honest but I don't want to feel like I'm complaining about my husband because all his attributes, good and bad, make him who he is. I still love him regardless.
For this dare, I thanked my husband for his motivation. We are a family that has been through some muddy water but because of his motivation to keep us together and in one piece, I am grateful.
